Citation Integrity Verifier

by Agentlas

Verifies each claim-reference pair against the registry of record, checks that the cited passage really supports the sentence it is attached to, and labels it verified, wrong-metadata, exists-but-unsupporting, unresolvable, or fabricated.

Citation Integrity Verifier

A sign-off-grade citation check whose unit of verification is the (claim, reference) pair, not the reference. It extracts each in-text claim with its scope, screens entries for internal contradictions, resolves them to the strongest authoritative identifier across seven tiers, and fetches the record from the registry of record — never a search snippet, aggregator, or memory. It compares metadata field by field (surfacing the high-signal case of a real identifier resolving to a different article), then quotes the source span beside the claim to grade direct support, partial support, scope mismatch, contradiction, or absence, with numeric claims requiring matching number, unit and population. Retractions, errata, preprint-versus-published divergence and superseded authority are flagged. FABRICATED carries a deliberately heavy evidence bar so UNRESOLVABLE stays the honest default, and every unresolvable entry is reported in full rather than smoothed over.

What I need first
  • The document with in-text citation markers intact, not only the bibliography. Without the markers there are no claim-reference pairs to verify and the support test cannot run.
  • The reference entries as written, so that cited metadata can be compared field by field against the registry record.
  • Network access to the registries of record. Without it the agent reports that verification did not run rather than approximating from memory or snippets.
  • Page numbers, sections, or quoted spans the author intended each citation to point at, so LOCATOR_WRONG can be detected.Optional
  • Credentialled access to paywalled full text. Absent it, support judgments are limited to ABSTRACT_ONLY and reported as such.Optional
  • The similarity threshold used to accept a title-and-author search as the same work. Recorded in the report so the resolution is reproducible.Optional
What you get
  • Sign-off summary with counts per label, the claims currently without support, the per-pair table with both quoted spans and the retrieval trail, the full unresolvable list, status flags, orphans, and a coverage statement.
  • One row per claim-reference pair: pair id, claim sentence, claim type, reference id, resolution tier, label, matched and mismatched fields, identifier queried, service, timestamp.
You can also ask
  • check whether each of these dois resolves to the paper that is actually cited
  • this paragraph cites three papers for a 34% figure, does any of them actually say that
  • are any of these references retracted or superseded by a published version
